For a while, people have been speculating whether or not Twitter will begin charging a monthly account fee in order to cash in on the site’s popularity. If Twitter begins charging, I suspect people who already have an account will pay for the service. They already have invested a great deal of time in building a following and will be hesitant to terminate their accounts.
Potential new users will be less likely to sign up, and Twitter’s growth rate will plummet. If the percentage of new users signing up for the service becomes stagnant, businesses could be less likely to maintain an active presence on the site. This could diminish Twitter’s role as an engagement tool.
For the time being, Twitter remains free and until that changes, I expect its popularity to grow.
