Last December, a report released by the Pew Internet & American Life Project predicted: “The mobile device will be the primary connection tool to the internet for most people in the world in 2020.” Recent findings by comScore seem to suggest that the 2020 date may be a conservative estimate. According to comScore, 22.4 million people accessed news and information via the internet on their mobile devices on a daily basis in January, a 107 percent increase from a year earlier. Perhaps an even more telling indication of how commonplace mobile web usage is becoming is the fact that 70 percent of those using the mobile web are using standard phones rather than the iPhone or the other pricey options. That suggests a widespread adoption not simply confined to the smartphone crowd.
I suspect this trend toward increased mobile web access will only further fuel the demand for real-time web interactions and continue to bolster the popularity of sites like Twitter.
